FAQs

To calculate how much horsepower you’ll need to pull a Horse Trailer, determine the total loaded trailer weight with all the horses and equipment you plan to transport. From there, you can determine which vehicle has enough horsepower and towing capacity to pull that weight. For a lightweight trailer that can accommodate 1-2 horses, a horsepower of 200-300 is recommended. For larger trailers with multiple horses, you may want a vehicle with 400 horsepower or more.

In most cases, you can simply adhere to the speed limit to safely drive your horses. If you’re concerned about swaying or losing connection to your trailer, consider one with safety features such as an electric drum brake system or safety chains. If you aren’t too familiar with driving trailers, it’s better to go slower at first until you become more comfortable.

The type of trailer you need will depend on the breed, size, and number of horses you plan to transport. For small to medium-sized horses, a standard enclosed trailer will work. For multiple horses or larger breeds, you’ll want a larger trailer with multiple stalls.

For one to two horses, you’ll need a horse trailer that’s approximately 10-16 feet in length, 6 feet wide, and 7 feet long. In general, when determining what size Horse Trailer you’ll need, it’s best to measure your horse’s height, length from head to tail, and width across their chest and ensure that there is additional room from those measurements for them to move around comfortably.
